I think the two most important things a writer aspiring to be traditionally published needs to do are:
1. Read a lot of recently released books, especially in your genre, so you know what the market is looking for.
2. Learn about the business of writing by following agent and editor blogs as well as attending writers conferences, if possible, and getting a critique from someone in the industry.
If you start out doing these two things, you will be way ahead!
