Myka asked:

So I broke down and watched the show before reading the book. Should I go back and try to read the book, or have I ruined the whole experience?

Jayna Actually, I am going to disagree with the others.
Books are almost always better, but this is one of the few I feel was not quite as good as the screen version. It is good. But I preferred the Netflix series better.
Why? Because there is more dimension. The book features only Hannah and Clay, with a few parts where Tony appeared, and almost everyone else is talked about through Hannah and/or Clay's observations.
In the Netflix series, you get a better understanding of the other characters. I feel that by getting to know the other characters better, the story is more impactful.
Tanna I feel like with most books that get turned into screen plays, the book is much better. The same goes for this. I first read this book maybe 7-8 years ago and have read it a couple times over and really enjoyed it. The book is dark and intense and worth the read. They changed and added so many things in order to get 13 1-hour long episodes just for the sake of filling up time.
Belle this is totally not like me at all but I liked the series better. it was more suicide prevention and showed a lot more character development
Lois May The book is always better than the movie regardless of what the book is about
Kelsey I did the same thing. The book is so much better! I couldn't put it down even though I knew the ending. There are a good amount of differences you will find in it also. The book is more from Hannah's point of view also. I recommend that you read it.
Jim O'Donnell I think the book gives the reader much more in Hannah's voice than the show gives the viewers. Although I liked the show, I think it stretches the story too far and too thinly, with the subsequent seasons that continue the story well past where the book ended. In my opinion, a big part of the book's strength is that it ends where it ends . . . for me, there's a potency in the book that gets diluted in the show.
Annyomos THERE'S A MOVIE?????????????WHERE????????I WANT TO WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤯🤯🤯🤯
Jennifer I read the book after watching the series, and I agree with Jayna - the book is good, but I really thought the series fleshed out the rest of the characters and the story better. But yes, read the book!
Charlotte I attempted to watch the show before reading the book. Let's just say that I wasn't very happy with the show. From an actor's perspective, it was very melodramatic. I've also struggled with suicidal thoughts and even though I wasn't triggered by anything in the show, it was kind of hard to watch because it seemed like they were a) filling time up and b) warping the story told in the book. I would suggest reading the book. It's a lot better, more down to the point, and represents suicide in a more meaningful way.
