asked:
I've just finished Rules of Prey, and I'm going to start Shadow Prey. My question is, does Davenport become more likeable as the series goes on? I like Sandford's plotting and pacing, but found Davenport to be almost completely unsympathetic. I'm not sure I want to fully dive into the series if he doesn't progress as a character. I like flawed characters, but didn't care for him in the first book.

Yes, in later books does grow and learns how to be faithful. As we all know, Davenport isn't atypical.. there are many men and women who are unable to be faithful or loyal to good people that love them, and without any understandable justification other than the urge in their loins, betray them, but had Davenport not evolved in- to a better person I wouldn't have read almost everyone of his many successive books. I almost quit this book a dozen times... his behavior at the hospital bedside of his married "lover" under the nose of her faithful husband was especially appalling. The only reason I finished it was because after reading successive books, he does stop behaving like a hormone driven 14 year old.

Agree with the other answers here. In this book especially his treatment of women is...not great. There are a couple chapters that read like soft-core porn. Sandford does mellow him out over the course of the series however.

The first book I read in this series was Hidden Prey. I really enjoyed that book, and decided to back track and tackle this series in order. Reading the first book in the series really floored me, as Lucas Davenport was unrecognizable as he is a happily married family man in Hidden Prey! I assure you that he does grow up at some point; just not sure when, but I am also looking forward to the transition!

In book 4, Eyes of Prey, I finally started Liking Lucas, I have most of the series, I say stick with Lucas, he will come around.
Tobias
No, he doesn't. If anything, he becomes LESS likeable.

Yes, Lucas is not very sympathetic, but he's incredibly smart. I read this book last as I read out of order for a while.
He is a hunter and a killer (when necessary). But again, so smart; that is what I like about him.
What I don't like is he eventually marries, and to me, his wife (after she marries him) is an arrogant jackass who thinks she's Joe Sleuth (she's a plastic surgeon..and no, I'm not impressed). At times, she thinks her sh*t doesn't stink, as well, which is unbecoming in a person. She was not like that while living with him. I don't understand his attraction to her. I wish Sandford will kill her off.
I wasn't a fan of Jen either who has a child with him. I liked Lily Rothenburg, whom he had a dalliance with...and also thought he was in love with. But note that Lucas likes women....he's been referred to as a womanizer, but I could say the same about Virgil Flowers, too...who settles down with trailer park trash (what was Sandford thinking?).
Maybe read a few more of this series, and then make the call.

In this book he is even more of a slime ball. I stopped reading the series.
