Tika Aulia asked Ian Rankin:

Hi Mr. Rankin, I find it difficult to differentiate crime, detective, and mystery fiction. Can you tell me the differences between these three genres? Or are they share similar characteristics? Thank you.

Ian Rankin I think they are vaguely interchangeable. Detective stories tend to feature detectives. Crime stories are stories in which crime features, whether any (police) detectives are involved or not.
