Anirudh asked Ian Rankin:

As a writer, how to base a story in a place not so familiar to you; I've noticed you do it in some of your books such as Blood Hunt which goes around the world. I always struggle whenever I try to take the story out of familiar territory and inevitably, I abandon the project. On a side note, any chances of visiting Chennai again?

Ian Rankin I had some personal knowledge of the places I wrote about in that book. But you don't need to have been somewhere to write about it. Science fiction writers have never been to the future. If you imagine a setting in convincing detail, readers will believe in it too.
