I really liked Annihilation but not so much the other books in the Southern Reach Trilogy. Do you think I will like this book?

Jess Disclaimer: I'm only halfway through Borne. But in terms of writing style and the book's characteristics so far, I think you will. I loved all three Southern Reach books, but Annihilation is my favorite. Borne is written from a first person perspective and VanderMeer has a good grasp of writing in the female voice, which I felt was evident in annihilation. Borne's a complex character, but VanderMeer does a good job of describing him, and he also develops the human relationships as much as he does the action and drama of the science. I also feel that Borne holds a clarity in writing style that the Southern Reach books lacked. I read a chunk of the ending, and there seems to also be resolution, which is a trait that the Southern Reach trilogy definitely lacked. Hope you'll give it a shot!
Sarah I felt the same about the Southern Reach Trilogy and it does not quite live up to the magic that was Annihilation, but it does outdo both Authority and Acceptance. It's worth reading.
Bigmouth I'm in the same boat -- loved Annihilation, but the others not so much -- and I really liked Borne.
Eris You will not like this book if you're looking for the same kind of weirdness. This is a straightforward adventure story with some gothic elements.
Jared Davis Annihilation consumes the reader with raw horror; Authority creeps around the readers' expectation for thrills with a keen, conspiratorial unravelling; Acceptance delivers an alien-yet-familiar world.

Borne tells of a humanity that the reader carries with them through the end-of-the-world; Borne shapes what comes after. Borne consumes what came before what the reader could not have shaken off otherwise.

I think you will like it.
Mark Gongloff I had exactly the same reaction to the SR trilogy and did enjoy this book. It is less weird and scary to me than Annihilation, but is still effective and engaging in a different way.
Kathleen I did not like Annihilation (was really bored) but I loved Borne. Definitely recommend it!
Emily Wong I like this book better than Annihilation. The world exists in Phillip K. Dicks imagination or perceived future reality of refugee camps and biotech gone wrong and diy.
Yona It's very different from any of the three Southern Reach books. Annihilation is a thriller and Authority reads almost more like a spy story. Borne occupies a totally different world, a darkly whimsical one. It's more similar in tone to A Peculiar Peril.
Seán Higgins Yes!
BORNE -- both the character & the novel -- are well-conceived and wildly imagined!
