Why do authors go back and write a book before the first book in the series?

Tricia Mingerink The only time I've done this was a prequel-sequel that started before the first book in the series, then ended after book 3, and it was meant to be read as a 3.5 novella. In my case, I wrote this because I had a lot of readers clamoring to more details about a certain character's backstory and I had a story idea that needed to be told.
