Goodreads asked Paula Lofting:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Paula Lofting Firstly, make sure you use a good professional editor. Everyone needs one, regardless of what some authors will tell you -they are usually the ones whose work is not up to a good standard. Ask the prospective editor to give you a sample of their work. If they really care about their work then they should demonstrate they are able to perform to your expectation. Why waste money on editors who aren't going to deliver?
Secondly, write for yourself first, don't fall into the trap of writing in a genre just because it is popular and will sell. If your heart isn't in it, it will reflect in your writing. If you write the book you want to read, your passion and belief in yourself will shine through. If people buy your work, it will be a bonus; if they like it, its another bonus. Above all write what you do best.
