Hey Mark! I'm reading the Emperor of Thorns now and i'm more and more curious. There are torture, rape and some other kind things in the books. Especially the Bad Dogs part in the third book. How can these ideas come up in a someone's head? I mean You were a biology scientist if I'm correct, I persume you are not thinking about these things when you working. So my question in short, how did You get these ideas?

Hi Tamas, actually my degree was in physics and my Ph.D was in an area of mathematics.
An easy answer is that we only have to look at the news reports to be immersed in rape, torture, and violence. And that films ramp it up still further.
But the real issue here it seems to me is an innate suspicion of imagination:

Afternoon, Mark. Do you have any tips on discovery writing? I've written two novels now that feel so 'meh' using extensive outlining. I'm writing a third, but I'm already losing steam following the outline. There's just no life or finesse in my work--nothing jumps off the page. I want to be able to write more character focused. However, I think of sitting down to write with nothing to follow, and it scares me :)
