Hi Matthew. Thanks for the question. The easiest answer is my parents. They read to me constantly when I was a kid, told me stories, and encouraged me to make up my own. The first was a three-pager (with only a few words per page) titled Anty's Avinchir (Anty's Adventure) about a small ant who leaves home to explore the world, has a good time, then goes home. The Emperor's Blades is a little more complicated than that, but I like to think the same principles apply...

Cheeky second question: I love writing stories. However, whenever it comes time for simple things like birthday cards (or speeches), the best I can come up with is 'Dear X, Happy birthday, from me', so my partner writes them. Is there any particular style of writing that you cannot stand and actively avoid?
