Celeste Ng Thanks for your question, Judi! The storyline itself is completely fictional--Lydia isn't based on me, nor are the Lees based on my own family. But sadly, with one exception, all of the moments of prejudice that occur in the novel are things that have happened to me, family or friends, or people I know. I've been lucky and have had a very different experience being an Asian American than the Lees have, but these kinds of moments still happen, more frequently than we'd like to believe.
