A Goodreads user asked:

I keep seeing it's a bad book, but most of the reviews say it's bad because it's just a chick lit. Is this the case or is it really horrendous writing? In other words, is it bad writing or just a sh*tty, girly plot?

J Smith This is far from a chick lit. The writing is done very well (almost TOO well in the begninning as it becomes a little monotonous to read), and although a slow start in the begining the plot picks up steam and it becomes very interesting.
David Carter Lauren, I'm a middle-aged male and I enjoyed this book, so to me, it wasn't bad chick-lit. I'm a bit surprised by all the reviews saying it was boring. I guess they were expecting a more lurid tale of sex, drugs and rock-n-roll inside a Manson-esque compound. It's not like that at all. While there is some graphic sex scenes (but not too many) the story is really about how this awkward teenager became enraptured of these fascinating girls and their free spirit and how she got sucked into this cult. It was more about her relationship with this one girl in particular, and how it influenced her other relationships with friends and parents, than it was about a Manson-like cult leader.
I liked it. It kept my attention and I finished it in about four days. It's not a pot boiler or crime novel, but more of a fascinating look at growing up in the late sixties.
