What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

Anna Lee Huber I don't know about in my own life, but I do have an ancestor whose mystery I would love to solve. I have a great-great-great grandfather who disappeared. No one living knows what happened to him. It was rumored he fought in some clandestine way during the Civil War, but I've done research and discovered the timing is wrong for it to have been that. There's every possibility that he did something shameful or illegal and my ancestors at that time refused to pass down the real story. All I know is that within a year of fathering my great-great grandfather he vanishes from record. Did he abandon my g-g-g-grandmother? Was he run out of town? Did he head out west? Did he change his name? Was he killed? I don't know. Though the writer in me likes to contemplate the possibilities.
