In 1995 I discovered my grandfather and his entire family was listed in the 1900 Louisiana census as black. I had no idea. When I questioned my mother about her black heritage, at first she denied it, then she swore me to secrecy until her death. I kept her secret for 17 years. In 2015 after her death, I revealed her secret on PBS's Genealogy Roadshow. Three days later the family I never knew found me.
