Before and at the beginning of a novel, my inspiration comes from my excitement over the subject, my idea of how the novel will be constructed, and my sense that I have something important to say. During the writing process, my inspiration comes from those inevitable "discoveries" that happen along the way, some of which were unseen, and thus unanticipated, at the start.
