Teresa The affair wasn't necessary at all. I loved Madeline's relationship with her husband in the book! In the mini-series Ed seemed way too insecure. I don't think they had much chemistry , either.
Fiona The problem with this change to the story is that Madeleine is meant to be the contrast to the other women. Celeste and Jane's stories (plus a few others) are brought into highlight by the fact that Madeleine is very normal, even though she thinks she isn't. Also, her marriage is too good for her to even consider it.

I read that Reece Witherspoon thought Madeleine was not interesting enough, and wanted to zoop her up. Pity, because I think Madeleine is the centre of the story, and deserves better.
At work listening I have to agree with you on that one, regarding Madeleine's affair.
Rosella I felt as if the creators of the mini-series thought everyone had to have a problem relating to sex. Thus the added an affair for Madeline and placed a bigger emphasis (in my opinion) on the sexual component in Celeste's problems.
