Goodreads asked Katie Masters:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Katie Masters Writing is a lot like drawing. You have to do it A LOT. You have to mess up A LOT. And you should--and will--copy the voices of authors you like reading, A LOT. And that's all okay. As an artist you're told to copy your favorite illustrators for practice, and from that conglomerate comes your own style.

Also, learn the difference between a troll and an honest HELPFUL critique. A troll will tell you your work sucks and leave you in a quivering mass of jello. An honest critique is one where they point out your mistakes, but tell you what you could do to improve. Or if you're lucky, they'll also compliment you on the things you ARE strong at.

And finally, TAKE the criticism, especially if a lot of people all point out the same thing. Be humble enough to know that your writing is always improving and changing---and that's a good thing!

Don't give up! (maybe I should have said this first.....Hm.)
