With all character backstories I'm just trying to shine a little light on the question, "Why are they like this?" But you know, you don't want it to be over-simplified ("His father was killed by a wolf, and thus became the world's most dangerous wolf-hunter!"). In Dave's case, I wanted to make it clear that this is a person who had no good role models, and a very low opinion of adults in general. He never had a solid basis to build from or anyone to impart wisdom to him. His earliest memories are of realizing adults don't know what they're talking about, and won't come to the rescue if you're in trouble. So he has no respect for authority or for the system in general, and his first instinct is never to ask for help, in any situation. Even in cases where it clearly would have been the right choice.
With John you can tell he's the opposite, but again not in a good way. He's from a family of musicians, somewhat carefree people with big personalities. Or rather, his dad was a musician, his mom was some hot girl he banged.

Sorry if this has been asked before but, how did you craft your writing style? Does it just come naturally or does it take a lot of revision, was there anything that inspired it? I remember stumbling on a cracked article you wrote and falling in love with how you write, which obviously lead me to your books.

David Wong:
I just finished "Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits", and I was wondering if at some point in the outline/draft process, Andre and Molech were supposed to be related in some way? I had that idea stuck in my head because both of them use the word "daddy" to describe fathers (Andre for Zoey's, Molech for his). Was their use of "daddy" an intentional red herring or just coincidence? The book was great, by the way.
