P.C. Cast Rephaim isn't entirely a paranormal being anymore (Raven Mocker), nor is he completely human. As you pointed out - humans don't turn into ravens. Nyx isn't done with Rephaim yet. You'll have to wait and see what she has planned for him in future books...
