Where do your characters come from? How do you go about forming your characters?

Charlaine Harris Hard to answer concisely. Some of my characters are created to fill a particular role in keeping the action of the book going. My protagonists are built bit by bit as they are; then I understand where they've come from. Their backstory emerges. I hope this makes sense to you.
