I think it would have been a bit more difficult to get a visa for the US nowadays. Perhaps because the author is an American citizen, he did not realize this? ;0)

When he was posing as Bram he was "visiting" and wouldn't need a visa to come to the US. As for Kate, she may have been able to quickly get a US student visa, having a family member in the US? I also assumed because when she speaks to the police she references the swap first being mentioned in late Feb or early March, which makes me think it is at least April before she comes to the US. That still doesn't mean she could have gotten it in that time, but when I tried to research it, some of the websites I found said student visas process the quickest and can often take a few days to a few weeks.(less)
