One thing the protagonist is trying to figure out is whether genuine communication is even possible: Can you say what you mean? Can you really understand what someone is saying? All of those concerns are tied into the protagonist's relationship with Ivan.

So if you're interested in questions like these around language, you might find it a good read. But it's certainly not a "romance" novel in the sense that the emphasis is on flirting, courting, and all that stuff. It's there, but it's subordinate to the psychological growth (or lack of it) of the protagonist.(less)
