If you're looking for a romantic book you'll want to walk on by. This definitely would disappoint you.
Lisa McKenzie
This is a book about a person who is interested in romance, but doesn't know quite how to approach it. I could identify with that struggle.
Ashley Beardsley
Depends on what kind of romance you're into. It has a quirky romance between two characters.
Jessica Jernigan
It's true that the protagonist's relationship with a man is a central element of the book, but if you are looking for something that conforms to the romance genre, this book might not be what you're looking for. It's a terrific book, though.
Sarah Funke Donovan
It's a quirky romance but involves heart break.

I would say it is less about romance and more about the dissapointment that comes with projecting desire onto someone in your college/uni years. If you're looking for something spicy, probs not the book for you, but I really couldn't reccomend this book more. I really enjoyed it!

One could say that romance depends on is communication, which depends on language. One thing the protagonist is trying to figure out is whether genuine communication is even possible: Can you say what you mean? Can you really understand what someone is saying? All of those concerns are tied into the protagonist's relationship with Ivan.
So if you're interested in questions like these around language, you might find it a good read. But it's certainly not a "romance" novel in the sense that the emphasis is on flirting, courting, and all that stuff. It's there, but it's subordinate to the psychological growth (or lack of it) of the protagonist.

I heard an interview this morning on npr with Elif on her book. There is definitely a romance.
