My advice is simple - read and write. Read widely and deeply, from the classics to young adult (some of the best plotting is to be found in young adult novels). And write. Write every day, even when you don't know what to write about - you have to write. Finally, be observant. Pay attention to the world around you, to people, to conversations heard on a bus. Writing is about being engaged in life.
