Sharon Robinson
Sharon Robinson asked Jacqueline Winspear:

I appreciate the historical background of your works. Does your historical research inform the direction you go with Maisie? Or does her growth determine the history you choose?

Jacqueline Winspear Thank you, Sharon. If I am situating a character in a certain place and time, then there are aspects of that place and time that will dictate how s/he dresses, speaks, acts, responds to events etc. I don't think the growth of any character dictates the history chosen - they are in a certain place and time, and (frankly) they have to get on with it, dealing with the challenges and opportunities presented to them. How they then respond reflects the era too.
