(view spoiler)[I am so saddened that Maisie cannot seem to keep happiness in her life. It is getting increasingly depressing. Do you expect that she will ever be happy again? (hide spoiler)]

Remember this is a series - and there is an overall arc to each of the characters, not only for each book, but for the series as a whole. Also remember that in the early part of the last century, loss was often more immediate - due to extended families, people died at home with family so there was - arguably - a greater sense of the rhythm of life, and that which could interrupt it. Children died in infancy, women in childbirth, and there were two major wars, and many small wars. The overall message is one of endurance, which I think was a hallmark of those generations - and at the end of A Dangerous Place, there is of course Hope. There is more to come for Maisie and her fellow characters.

I'm a huge Maisie Hobbs fan—I have so much respect for you as the author! When I talk about the books to others, I tell them what attracts me most; what I consider the "spiritual nature" of the books. I mean the way Maisie's cases always have an aspect that teaches her about her own life and how she needs to grow. I never see this mentioned in other reviews. I wonder if you would identify the quality that way, or not?

Huge fan of Maisie Dobbs. My question is two part. When Maurice Blanche took Maisie on as a student when she was 13, she was assigned to read various books from different subjects. I wondered if you will have a list of Maurice Blanche's syllabus or an example like a similar syllabus in one of your future newsletters?
