Where did you get the character of Maisie from? Is it yourself or a mixture of a number of people?

Mark, Maisie just popped into my head whilst I was stuck in traffic on my way to work in the year 2000. She is not me, and she is not based upon anyone I know - if anything she is inspired by the remarkable generation of women who came of age in the Great War. They were the first generation of women in modern times to go to war in great numbers - over 25 years before the "Rosie the Riveter" generation.

I love your books but I sometimes find it frustrating that it seems you really don't want Maisie Dobbs to be happy. How many bad things can happen to one character?! I realize you want to concentrate on aspects of the mystery at hand but often, crucial events in her life seems to be handled in the space of a few scant pages or in flashback, especially in "A Dangerous Place".

I don't know how old you are (and I'm too much of a gentleman to ask) but do you envisage writing about Maisie for many years yet (hoping ardently the answer is yes!) and what age do you think she will be when you run out of things to say about her? Are there any other characters with a story or stories to tell?

I wonder if Masie Hobbs is going to confront the horrors of WWII at all, the Nazis etc.? I feel for people who had to go through not only one but two world wars! I really enjoy your books and I like learning what it was like for people back then. My losses were in WWII as a child in England.
