Ok, so I had the audible version, and I was a bit distracted occasionally... Why was Delilah so set on participating in the tournament this year instead of waiting and getting some proper training? It felt like she did the tournament simply because she could, and she was impatient. Did I miss another reason for her doing the tournament?

Probably not. Strikes me as a perfectly adequate reason for entering from Lilah's point of view. There was no particular downside to entering and losing her first time out, after all.
