When I was in the Marine Corps, I would take a book or two with me when we deployed. Even for back yard operations on our base. There were times when I'd read the books too fast. With having nothing left to do, I'd write short stories for people in my platoon to read. They couldn't believe that I wrote a story they would like. Then I stopped. I got out of the military after my tour in Iraq, and I had to move on. College, work, moving. I got married, and started a family. I had more important things to do. Now that we have set down roots, I have free time for hobbies now.

One day I told my wife that I wanted to write. She had no idea. I told her an idea of a story I wanted to tell. She told me to write something for her. So I took a couple of minutes to write a scene that ended up being in my first novel. She read it, and couldn't believe it. I brought it up out of the blue. It surprised everyone that knew me. I'm not your typical writer. Played team sports growing up, joined the Marine Corps, Iraq combat veteran, degree in Criminology, spend my Thursday nights, Sunday, and Monday nights watching football. I own rifles for target shooting, and hunting. I'm into muscle cars, and do a lot of handiwork. And out of nowhere I have fantasy, action, and all sorts of different novels planned.

I still work, but my inspiration to write is to see books with my stories on people's bookshelves. Seeing other people pursuing their dreams has been my inspiration. I watch a lot of football. And I see these athletes playing on TV. They've been practicing, and playing at the sport their whole lives. It's what they worked for, and their dream job. I thought about my dream of writing. If those guys could pursue their dream, why couldn't I write on the side? Writing comes naturally for me, and I'm not that bad at it.(less)

Yo…moreI was a civilian working for companies who were contracted by the US military in the Middle East. I spent nearly a decade in Iraq, Oman, and Qatar. You could write so many different plots based on that alone.

A murder mystery in a ME country. I used to live on a tiny island off the Coast of Oman. To get to Masirah Island, I would have to take a 2 hour vehicle ferry ride, and then drive through the desert and mountainous interior of Oman for at least 7 hours. So much could happen on that trip.

Or a crime thriller that takes place in an ultra rich city rising out of the desert. I lived in Doha, and used to frequent bars and clubs there popular with the Expat community. The places were ripe for thriller plots!

You could even have an action & adventure based on a civilian in a military convoy that's ambushed while heading out to a Joint Security Station. I used to convoy with the military to set up comm suites on big bases, FOB's, COP's, JSS's, etc. I could see a plot based on a JSS being attacked, and the civilian who is former military is thrust into a life and death situation. Needs to pick up a weapon and help in defending the place.(less)
