Cheri I didn't put a suggestion up this month - we have plenty to choose from - but will those of you who did share your reasons for nominating the books you did?

message 2: by Nikki (new)

Nikki I nominated How Sweet it is because I already have it and started reading it and it's cute.

message 3: by Alu (new)

Alu I didnt suggest anything but I'm excited to see the new Jae. I just ordered it at work too so I'm set if that's the winner.

message 4: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I'm voting for Hild (for now, at least) because it sounds interesting. There are a few others that I'd like to read or have already read, though, so who knows where my vote will end up.

message 5: by Blu (new)

Blu I suggested "Bottle Rocket" by Ann McMan. She's a phenominal author, I mean "Famous Author". ;-)
This is pretty short, funny and sweet.
It might be a viable buddy read to offset a heavier read.

Oh I do want to read Hild too!

message 7: by Ezra (new)

Ezra So do we vote for just one out of the selections?

message 8: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Ezra wrote: "So do we vote for just one out of the selections?"

Yep vote for 1. You can always change your vote later though if you change your mind.

message 9: by d_fossey (new)

d_fossey I nominated Denial which I read a few months ago and I found it to be very moving and powerful.

message 10: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch I voted for true nature :-) I LOVE the cover, so much so that I will be getting it in paperback, which is rare for me to do. And I loved second nature so I'll be looking forward to reading this one.

If it doesn't get picked, I'll do a buddy read with you. I want to read it but haven't had the time yet.

message 12: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch Sweet! I'm so up for that :-D

message 13: by Ezra (new)

Ezra What is the idea behind a buddy read?

message 14: by Cheri (new)

Cheri A buddy read is simply a thread that can be created by any member when two or more members want to read the same book and discuss it.

If you go to the discussions section from the link on the top right, you'll see a section for Buddy Reads and a load of books that have already had a thread started.

Everyone should feel free to comment on any of the existing threads - I guarantee that someone will jump back into the conversation with you. Except for the authors of the books. No authors should be in the threads for their own books. If the readers are interested, we can set up an author Q&A thread and reach out to see if the writer is interested in joining in.

message 15: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I had the good fortune to read Hild in manuscript. I was about 1/3 of the way through when I realized that Nicola Griffith is giving us back women's history. As a native Yorkshire lass, she knows the place, and she has the writing chops to drag you back into early medieval times and make you see and feel the world as it was then, and as it appeared to women. She shows us that women have always been actors, not just reactors, in historic events. Add to that the beauty of her prose, and you have a stunning reading experience!

message 16: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Burnes I voted for Hild because I never have the books that are discussed and I do have it and am reading it!

message 17: by Carrie (new)

Carrie I chose 'Give Me A Reason' because the description warned of angst. And I think I am up for a bit of that right now.

message 18: by nancyjean (last edited Nov 20, 2013 09:08AM) (new)

nancyjean I put up "Give Me a Reason" because it gave me a delicious book hangover from staying up all night reading it. I'll need to re-read it because I lost some memories from sleep deprivation.

It is long and angst-y and just when I thought "does it really need to keep going?" the ending proved it DID need to be that long.... I thought I knew where it was headed and then it took a turn.

It's not perfect, but then that just gives readers something to talk about in the thread, right?

message 19: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter I nominated Santa Olivia because it's good fun, with a lovely relationship at its heart. I want to read Hild but it's only out on Kindle over here at the moment, and I think Ferox will want to wait for the paperback (as will I, I'm not sure I have the muscles to hold up such a huge hardback!)

message 20: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Burnes Hild isn't as big as I feared it would be, at more than 500 pages. I've heard good things about Santa Olivia.

message 21: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter Santa Olivia is fab. I'm a big fan of Jacqueline Carey and, at the time of its release, it was the closest she'd come to writing a modern day novel, so it was great to see her play around with a new setting and different language. It might also be the gayest book she's written...

message 22: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I'm going to have to read it. You've mentioned several times how much you've enjoyed it.

message 23: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch I just read the blurb, Sounds awesome!

message 24: by Astrid (new)

Astrid I voted for Hild out of several reasons. One being that I absolutely love everything early medieval and I have a thing for England ;-)

message 25: by Susanne (new)

Susanne I nominated Blood Guilt. It's a great book in the mystery genre, very well written with a bit of humour. This is book 1 in a 4 book series. The series is mostly based in and around Melbourne, Australia.

message 26: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Burnes I had the good fortune to hear Melissa Brayden read in Provincetown. She was amazing (has acting experience). That alone made me want to read How Sweet It Is.

I'd be fine with doing a buddy read for it if it doesn't win. Also, i could ask her if she wants to do an author q&a if people have questions for her.

message 28: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean Looks like it's Hild in December.
