Valerie None of these are actually my weirdest. I've done all of these, and a few more. My most unusual places are actually reading for hours at a time on the steps to my basement(while munching on carrots and while people are trying to walk around me), and reading while perched on top of exercise equipment (while also eating snacks) where the manufacturers certainly didn't intend people to sit.

message 2: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne I do pretty much all of them... except for the bath one ahahaha. I've done a couple more. My weirdest would be reading in the middle of a national examination. A couple of them.

message 3: by Teleseparatist (new)

Teleseparatist While brushing my teeth and/or doing the dishes, I guess. Thank you, e-reader :D

message 4: by KatieMc (new)

KatieMc What about all of the above?

message 5: by Deanna (new)

Deanna I don't think most of these are all that unusual. My weirdest reading habit is laying in the grass to read, because I'm allergic. But I just can't help it. There's just something about reading outside that relaxes me like nothing else.

message 6: by Gemma (new)

Gemma Why is it if you walk along texting on your cell phone, no one thinks it's weird, but if you read a book while walking, people look at you like you're crazy? I read while walking to pick my son up from school, and people always give me funny looks, but never give funny looks to people fiddling with their smartphones.

Day-thief What about "at your desk at work, hiding your phone under a pile of printouts"? Not that I'm speaking from personal experience, mind you.

message 9: by Gisele (new)

Gisele Once I was chopping some food while reading! How dangerous is that???!!! Thanks God, nothing happened.. hahaha.

أبو يوسف This is an example for the most unusual reading positions:

description

"Reading the Quran, front line, Iran-Iraq war, Ahvaz, Iran, September 1982"

message 11: by Anya (new)

Anya Everything except while bathing.(One of the downsides of having an e-reader) Oh and while walking down the road. A friend of mine used to say, "When this girl dies, I bet she'd be having a book in her hand."

message 12: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Brady I read just about anywhere so none of these seem so unusual, and it would be nice to check off all that apply instead only one choice.

message 13: by KatieMc (new)

On more than one occasion I have put my kindle in a ziplock freezer bag and read in the tub.

lol
Not for any book I hope so... only the really good ones worth that risky!

message 15: by Nance (last edited Aug 01, 2013 08:26AM) (new)

Nance Not for nothing, but there's been a few occassions when a book was so good and my family kept interrupting me, that I decided to go shopping, just to get some peace and quiet to read. Well, a few hours later I'd return home, and my family would ask, "Where's your bags? You said you were going shopping." And, then I'd laugh, and say, "I only made it to the parking lot because I was so hooked on this book, and nobody here would leave me alone to read it." They all just laughed, probably thinking I'm so weird. But, now they know to leave me alone when they haven't seen me come out of my bedroom in a few hours...I'm reading, damn it!!!! Lol!!!! So, I guess I've done quite a bit of reading in the unusual spot of the grocery store or mall parking lot....

Amanda KatieMc wrote: "Anya wrote: "Everything except while bathing.(One of the downsides of having an e-reader)..."

That is a GENIUS idea!

message 17: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Well, I've done nearly all of the above. And then some. As for the toilet one...once it was dinner time, but I was at the climax of a book, so I hid in the bathroom. And, er, forgot how long I'd been in there. My mom came and knocked on the door and said "Are you okay? You've been in there a long time." I replied something like "Uh...yeah, sorry...I'm just suffering from climax-itis." She kinda gave me a strange look when I came out...:)

message 18: by LeeAnn (new)

LeeAnn Taylor Um. I wish we could vote for more of these. I've done ALL of them

message 19: by April (new)

April None of these are too odd, and I've done them all. But there's a big one they missed-reading outside! I read in a comfy patio chair with my legs up on the table to prop my book on. It's comfier than it seems.

message 20: by Leland (new)

Leland I've done all of these.

Washing the dishes and reading was the most difficult (and only possible at all thanks to the 'read to me' feature on my kindle because it automatically turns the pages for me. What? I don't want to get my kindle all wet and soapy. :)

message 21: by Nazish (last edited Aug 01, 2013 10:25AM) (new)

Nazish I have tried all those. My weirdest reading position was a few nights back. I was perched up on a wall on my rooftop and was trying to read in pitch dark at midnight with a pen torch around my ear while holding a fat hardback in my hands. It was a torture to read in that dim light but I managed a few chapters until my neck ached by standing still and careful breathing. But I loved it!

message 22: by Jackie (new)

Jackie reading by that last bit of moonlight, while sitting in the passenger seat/backseat/back section of the car.

message 23: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Not that I think it's weird, but I've read while taking my 3 ferrets for a walk and my neighbours laugh at me. LOL

My dog has a big, comfy dog bed from Costco, and sometimes I like curling up on it to read.

I usually check out audiobooks from my library to combat that problem. :) If I have to read in motion, I just put the earbuds on and listen while I'm sweeping, mopping, or washing dishes.

I've done all of these and a few more, but I'll say reading in the bath, because it's extremely rare for me to do it. I'm always paranoid I might drop it. I also read while I exercise. Good way to pass the time of a workout session, especially on the elliptical.

message 25: by Kalilah (new)

Kalilah Honestly, who spends enough time on the toilet to read a book? Unless you have constipation issues. It's unhygienic and disgusting anyway!

message 26: by Manni (new)

Manni These are not the weird ones at all! I've done most of them.
Except of the few write-ins.
I've read so while walking that I've missed noticing a lamppost andwalked right into it.

message 27: by Ivy (new)

Ivy Reading in the movie theater while waiting for it to start.

Yeah, I keep my toilet clean. It's probably more hygienic than reading on the city bus. Still. I stick mainly to gaming magazines.

message 29: by Lostshadows (new)

Lostshadows I read in several of these positions or places, but while walking seems to be regarded as the weirdest by those around me. (Followed by the toilet. Not sure why, its a seat.)

message 30: by Katy (new)

Katy I've pretty much done all of the above, plus reading while laying on horseback, reading while sitting in a haystack, reading while waiting for a movie to start, reading while standing in line (anywhere), reading while on the bus, reading while in a car, reading while shopping. Yes, I've read while brushing my teeth, I've read while walking up to the mailbox, read while riding an exercise bike or walking on a treadmill... any given time or place or thing, I've probably read while doing it (except while physically driving a car, although I've read while stopped at a light or in a traffic jam).

message 31: by HJ (new)

HJ These aren't weird! Many of them happen every day. I didn't realise I was choosing one - I assumed I was clicking all those I did - so the result of the poll is skewed because it took the first one I clicked on as "the" answer.

message 32: by Juniper (last edited Aug 02, 2013 09:44AM) (new)

Juniper I've read in most of these places, as I read most everywhere, but I suppose the most unusual are,

a) On a large stone in the middle of a very wide, deep river with furious, cold waters. It can get slippery, but mostly it works just fine. I do this regularly when I visit the mountainous north. The noise from the river is soothing.
b) Sitting on the laundry basket in the bathroom, feet resting on the bath tub. It gets quite comfy and warm when the sun hits through the window.
c) Sitting on the kitchen workspace, beside the sink. Dangling your legs in the air, leaning against the cupboard, is sweet.
d) Um, and a bunch of other places. Everywhere.

Edit: Oh and I also read in the emergency ward when I was strapped down because I hit my back. Wasn't much of a success though, as I wasn't permitted to move my head at all.

message 33: by Karyn The Pirate (new)

Karyn The Pirate I wish you could vote for more than one! I also read while waiting on the exam table for the doctor. I am not sure there is anywhere you can't really read.

message 34: by Carol (new)

Carol I used to read on the Labor floor waiting for my patients to gear up to deliver. I got so good I could read and listen to the fetal monitors at the same time, and sometimes I even got to suggest names for the baby born from characters in the book I was reading (Rhodi was a favorite)

message 35: by Casseroll (new)

Casseroll Jackie wrote: "reading by that last bit of moonlight, while sitting in the passenger seat/backseat/back section of the car."

I think that's why my eyes are messed up. I did that so many times as a kid/teen, also with street lamps. There's light, it's gone, another light...etc. hahaha

message 36: by Tonina (new)

Tonina I'm another person who wishes the poll would allow me to vote for more than one option, because I've done most of these. And I think my most unusual place to read was reading a book on my Kindle while waiting to go into the delivery room for a scheduled C-section. I'd actually bought a new ebook on the way to the hospital, one I'd been dying to read, because I was so scared and I needed something to keep my mind occupied!

message 37: by Eve (new)

Eve I have always read when blow drying my hair! I sit cross legged and hold down the page with my foot.

message 38: by Linda (new)

Linda Gemma wrote: "Why is it if you walk along texting on your cell phone, no one thinks it's weird, but if you read a book while walking, people look at you like you're crazy? I read while walking to pick my son up ..."

You're so right!!

message 39: by Linda (new)

Linda I've done a lot of these.....when I was a kid, the top of our favorite climbing tree in the field across the street was a favorite. Comics on beach towels in the grass, drying off from the lake and eating poposicles, was another. And everyone used to tease me because I would wrap a big, fat Dickens hardback in a towel and swim out to the raft with one arm in the air. I'd be out there for hours with David Copperfield, Pickwick Papers, etc.--Just me, the waves and the sun. And I never went anywhere without a book--in the days of full-service gas stations, they always came in handy. Still do, in waiting rooms, lines, sola dinners in restaurants, etc.

This one isn't mine--I knew someone in grad school who, on his night to cook, would hold his book open with a shoe so that he could read while cooking dinner. And when his brother visited, would take a book on walks with his wife and his brother. That one always seemed a bit anti-social, to me.

Interesting article.
I suppose, if you kept the book under your armpit and didn't let it touch anything, or touch it with your own hands until you'd washed them, then it wouldn't get contaminated. But I still maintain it's an unbecoming habit. Also, the foul smells may be absorbed by the pages and I prefer my books to not stink of dung xD

yael These aren't my weirdest. I do a lot of these reading positions day-to-day. But i tried to vote as accurate as I could :P

Megan On the roof! All the time. And, occasionally, under a desk in a classroom because we aren't supposed to bring pleasure reading to school.

message 43: by Linda (new)

Linda Why do people think it's weird to read on the toilet? I do that ALL the time! My weirdest was probably laying on the adjusting table at the chiropractors while the machine was stretching my leg. LOL!

That's awesome! I would do that! LOL!

Linda Kalilah wrote: "Honestly, who spends enough time on the toilet to read a book? Unless you have constipation issues. It's unhygienic and disgusting anyway!"

If you're in the middle of a chapter and you have to go it doesn't matter how long it takes you don't want to stop reading! And how dirty is your bathroom? I put the book down when I'm doing anything that would be considered unhygienic and wash my hands before picking it up again. The subway is probably much dirtier than my bathroom & people read on there all the time!

R We are talking about weird, well I tell you the weariest places I read a book: inside a wardrobe with a flashlight, reading a porn book when I was 16 years old.
Or under the bed with a little tiny candle for the same reason ..another porn book ;)

message 47: by Amy (new)

Amy Yeah, no. My weirdest would have to be laying upside-down in my papasan with a Snuggie over my face and a pillow under my neck and my arms over my head with the book on the floor. Oh and my feet are probably on the window or the wall.

message 48: by Vickie (new)

Vickie Reading at work in the bathroom( just standing there) inbetween tables.... Lol.

message 49: by Katy (new)

Katy Oh, yes, I always read while I'm being tattooed. I know people think that's pretty weird...

Lobstergirl "Reading while laying on a high tree branch"

While laying what on a high tree branch? Where are you, standing on a ladder?
