Please note that both Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson and The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper are #2 in their respective series. In the case of Deadhouse Gates, the group read the first book in 2006. In the case of The Dark is Rising, the first book is considered more of a prequel to the main sequence. Both these books are said to be intended to be readable as stand-alone works, much like the Discworld or Culture series books often are.
