MEC Anyone want to comment on why they nominated or voted for a particular book? I nominated Written on the Body because I loved it the first time I read it (years ago) and wanted to see how it holds up to the test of time.

message 2: by f (new)

f I voted for CrossRoads because it's years since I read a Radclyffe and I want to try again to work out why she's so popular.

message 3: by Jenny (new)

Jenny It'd gotta be her sex scenes. I nominated More Than Friends because it looked different

message 4: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I didn't nominate anything because we had a load of suggestions already and I voted for Miserere because I thought it looked interesting and I've been wanting to try the author.

I love Erin Dutton so I may change my vote but probably not.

I was tempted to read Crossroads. It's the first in a series, isn't it? With the exception of Secrets in the Stone (I think that's the name) I've enjoyed the firsts of at least two of her other series.

message 6: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I'm gabby right now... I would love for All That Matters to win because I love that damn book. I read it again last week.

While I love Ali Vali's romance novels and the first 2 of the Devil series, I thought her first military book, Blue Skies, was terrible and am leaning toward avoiding The Dragon Tree Legacy. I've only heard from one or two friends who have read it and their opinions weren't encouraging...

message 7: by Sunny (new)

Sunny I voted for Miserere because it sounds interesting and so different from a lot of the books I've been reading. I was also swayed by what the bio said about the author's love of Nancy Drew!

message 8: by Jenny (new)

Jenny L Word looked interesting.

message 9: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean I am a huge Radclyffe fan but CrossRoads would not be the novel I'd recommend to lure you, Ferox, into reading her novels.

message 10: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean I put up Thin Fire because:
1) I was shocked I enjoyed a novel set in the 1970s this much.
2) This line: "This is my house. Your body is lovely but I have no interest in it; it's your intellect I want to seduce. Will you come in? I'll make espresso."*
3) The author's name, Nanci Little, makes me think she is the love child of me and Nikki Smalls. Hi baby mama!

*Fair warning: this bit of dialogue is NOT indicative of much of the novel set in the military in Texas, where the language and interactions are much rougher.

It's actually a standalone medical romance... set in Philly, so you get cameos of several characters from her other Philly based medical mysteries.

Jenny nancyjean wrote: "I am a huge Radclyffe fan but CrossRoads would not be the novel I'd recommend to lure you, Ferox, into reading her novels."

Nancyjean which Radclyffe is your favorite? Mine would have to be either one from the provincetown series or the honor series

message 13: by Jenny (new)

Jenny I really liked The lonely Hearts Club too

message 14: by f (new)

f nancyjean wrote: "I am a huge Radclyffe fan but CrossRoads would not be the novel I'd recommend to lure you, Ferox, into reading her novels."

Hmm, what would you recommend? I was kind of hoping the medicalish stuff (which I might like) would override the generic-ness of the romance. Sex scenes I can just skip...

message 15: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter I read the first couple of chapters of Crossroads and always meant to go back to it, I'll add that and The Dragon Tree Legacy to the holiday reading!

I'm torn though, because I adored Santa Olivia (I didn't nominate it, but love that someone else did!) It's the first time Jacqueline Carey's written something in "modern" English and it's great fun. Sadly, the sequel's bloody appalling...

message 16: by Nikki (new)

Nikki I didn't nominate a damn thing, but I literally just bought the Erin Dutton one...

But Nancy Jean's reasoning makes it almost imperative I vote for that!

Hmmmmmm..... TORN

message 17: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean Baby Mama, go with your heart... I want to read a whole bunch of the nominated books.

message 18: by Nikki (new)

Nikki If it doesn't win, I'll read our love child with you NJ

message 19: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean I did love Santa Olivia, and I enjoyed the "bloody appalling" sequel, too :P

Cheri, The Dragon Tree Legacy is more crime novel than military, and includes some criminals from the Devil series.

CrossRoads... I keep forgetting the story, and recall I was more interested in revisiting the characters from Fated Love, maybe my favorite Radclyffe novel.

All That Matters should be read annually, it's that good and long and juicy.

Something In the Wine was a fun read and I liked it more that some of the forum mates.

I actually own an unread copy [paperback] of Written On the Body, hmmm.

Except for Thin Fire, I have no knowledge of the other books, although Dutton's sample is on my kindle.

message 20: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I've not read any of Rads medical books, I don't think. Wait, I think I did read one. Maybe. I'll have to check.

I still have to read the last 2 books in the Devil series. The drastic ends to book 2 and 3 really pissed me off. I hate that. I understand cliffhanger but these were like chapter ends and not the ends of books. It made me feel bad about her books for awhile. I do wish she'd write more romance instead of crime or thrillers.

Fate Love is a favorite, and I have a soft spot for Love's Masquerade and Love's Tender Warriors. The latter is not as polished as her other books, but it's a rewrite of the online fic Golden Tiger. And Love's Tender Warriors makes me hoot happily because Radclyffe rips off scenes from her own online fics to give to the writerly characters. And the drama and angst of them all! Love it.

message 22: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I liked Love's Masquerade a lot. It was the first one of her online stuff that I had read. I've tried a few times to read Golden Tiger but couldn't get into it. I still haven't read the published Love's Masquerade. Do you know if they're very different?

Fated Love is the first of a series?

message 23: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean Cheri, Passion's Bright Fury (which I also enjoyed immensely) and Trauma Alert (not a favorite but still liked) revisit some of the same characters. Barely... the are vaguely connected. CrossRoards gives significant more time to characters in Fated Love than the other two.

I would recommend Fated Love to everyone, Passion's Bright Fury to most readers, and Trauma Alert & CrossRoads to Radclyffe fans.

I've only read the published Love's Masquerade, so I cannot compare it to the online version.

message 24: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Ok, I'll put Fated Love on my list and plan to read the published version of Love's Masquerade.

message 25: by Pin (new)

Pin I've never found an online version of Love's Masquerade. Love's Melody Lost yes but not Love's Masquerade. Both books are very good but my favorites are Passion's Bright Fury and Turn Back Time. Fated Love and Innocent Hearts are also very good.

message 26: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Oh! Pin, you're right. Sorry, I was thinking of Love's Melody Lost and have never read Love's Masquerade. Please ignore me.

message 27: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Cheri wrote: "Oh! Pin, you're right. Sorry, I was thinking of Love's Melody Lost and have never read Love's Masquerade. Please ignore me."

Easy! ;)

message 28: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I gotta stop making it so easy for you.

(that's what your mom said.)

message 29: by Nikki (new)

Nikki That's nice. I can't tell you how many easy memories I've had

(courtesy of your mom...)

message 30: by Pin (new)

Pin Cheri, there are no major differences between online and published version of Love's Melody Lost. Just some polishing and error corrections.

message 31: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Oh, well then I'll spend the money on something else. Maybe Love's Masquerade. ;-)

message 32: by Pin (new)

Pin nancyjean wrote: "All That Matters should be read annually, it's that good and long and juicy."

I agree completely. A really great book. It should be declared mandatory reading. :D

message 33: by SpritetheRight (new)

SpritetheRight Can't we just pick two books? I am pretty sure most of us read more than one anyway.

message 34: by Cheri (new)

Cheri If there's a two way tie, there will be two books. There's always Buddy Reads for non-selected books.

message 35: by Pat (new)

Pat Bane Cheri, Fated Love is a great book. It really isn't the first in a series. Her medical books are really stand alone. A few characters reappear in other books.

message 36: by SpritetheRight (new)

SpritetheRight I liked Fated Love too. Radclyffe has a formula. Sometimes I enjoy a book where everything gets totally messed up. That doesn't just with Radclyffe.

message 37: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean Michelle wrote: "Can't we just pick two books? I am pretty sure most of us read more than one anyway."

Now taking patronage job offers to change my vote to a front-runner :)

message 38: by SpritetheRight (new)

SpritetheRight The doesn't really matter to me I read whatever I want anyway. :)

message 39: by Alena (new)

Alena I nominated the Dragon Tree Legacy because I got my signed copy a week ago.

message 40: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean 3-way tie! Could it be?

message 41: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Does that mean read all 3 (gasp!) or pick one?

message 42: by Cheri (new)

Cheri If all three would make it, we'd make all three Books of the Month. We've done it with two. There's still 2 days of voting so it's pretty early.

message 43: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean In the past we have read all ties. Mastermind is whispering in my ear to change my vote to The Dragon Tree Legacy for a 4-way.

message 44: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I may change my vote just to avoid that. ;-)

message 45: by Pat (new)

Pat Bane I had read a review of Dragon Tree and it wasn't favorable.

message 46: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Don't do that, Cheri. Let's talk NJ into voting for Miserere and problem solved. :-)

message 47: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I agree. It looks interesting and from an author I've not read. After having such a great experience with After Mrs Hamilton, I'm hopeful!

message 48: by Nikki (new)

Nikki And so I have been swayed from Erin Dutton. But I still wanna read it if anyone's up for a buddy read!

message 49: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean I plan on reading Dutton's new one. I liked the sample.

message 50: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I'm in. Yes, please.
