I had a hard time deciding whether to choose "little bit" or "no". I know so little that it might as well be "no".

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the way you tell a website (like GR, or discussion boards, or LiveJournal, etc.) to mark-up certain text (bold, italics, strikethrough) or to encode links or images.
See the little "some html is ok" link above each comment box for some GR-specific examples.

HTML is also the building blocks from which an ENTIRE site is made of.

ohhh.... oh ok that kinda makes sense... thanks!
Mike wrote: "What a fascinating poll."LOL. By HTML I can only assume we're talking about the master philatelist Harold Theodore Marcus Latour. Yes, I know him. He's the head of the Boston Society for Sensual Philately.
I feel that people who know HTML are a dying breed, with all these fancy programs now that do all the work for you. Nothing wrong with good ol' Notepad.
HTML? Oh... it really depends on how you define the acronym. "HyperText Markup Language" - Yes I do!
"How To Meet Ladies" - I don't need that, cause I am one.
"How To Make... bla bla" (you know what I mean eh...) - I refuse to answer!

Yes, yes. Haha.

Design :)
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTMLHTML, which stands for HyperText Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for web pages. A markup language is a set of markup tags, and HTML uses markup tags to describe web pages.
HTML is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags, enclosed in angle brackets (like ), within the web page content. HTML tags normally come in pairs like and . The first tag in a pair is the start tag, the second tag is the end tag (they are also called opening tags and closing tags).
The purpose of a web browser is to read HTML documents and compose them into visual or audible web pages. The browser does not display the HTML tags, but uses the tags to interpret the content of the page.
HTML elements form the building blocks of all websites. HTML allows images and objects to be embedded and can be used to create interactive forms. It provides a means to create structured documents by denoting structural semantics for text such as headings, paragraphs, lists, links, quotes and other items. It can embed scripts in languages such as JavaScript which affect the behavior of HTML webpages.
Web browsers can also refer to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to define the appearance and layout of text and other material. The W3C, maintainer of both the HTML and the CSS standards, encourages the use of CSS over explicitly presentational HTML markup.[1]
I know enough to do general editing. HTML 5 is kicking my butt...I'm too distracted to give it the proper attention I want too.
Been using html since I was eleven, so I certainly do know it. Learnt a lot of it making layouts on games, actually. HTML + CSS = geekdom love.
Not that CSS is relevant to the poll, don't mind me.
I put a little bit but I actually can't use it even as much as I'd like to on Goodreads.I can do bold, underline, italics, strike through, but not pictures, or people, or groups. I have a few of my groups set up with HTML that I can copy and paste, but I'm missing something so when I try to do it with other groups, it never seems to work. When I follow the instructions that show in the (some html is ok) that show above message boxes, I must leave something out or do something wrong because I rarely can make it work.
So, actually I'm between no and a little bit.
yeah i know that. we just took it in class :)
Michael Thank you so much for referring me to your post 31. As I said I'm technically challenged so my response to your very kind explanation on post 31 is HUH??? Appreciate your kind effort!
@Sylvia: HTML is a markup language to create webpages. Your browser reads the HTML code, interprets it and display the page for you (like this page). If you do a right click on any page (like this for example) and select 'View page source' from the displayed options you will see what HTML code looks like. Hope this help you out. :-)
Lisa wrote: "I can do bold, underline, italics, strike through, but not pictures, or people, or groups."What do you mean by people or groups? Do you mean links to group pages or user profiles?
Linda wrote: "I am not even sure why this is a good question."People were asking for a "short cut" for a feature currently available only using HTML. I asked if Goodreads had any stats on how many people knew basic HTML and MICHAEL (a staff member) added this poll.
Syki wrote: "Oh, I LOVE this poll :D I am bookworm, I am IT and I am a girl :D"haha.. You go girl!!! I am a IT to.. <3
what the heck is html anyway? i am seeing it everywhere.
it is a code which uses tags to make web sites. If you want to see a web site viewed in HTML go to file and View Page Source. The page will show how it was made via HTML. for example to have a word written on your web site you need tags to display the word. like this is a tag
you cant see what I Placed in between the 'this is a tag' but I used tags like the letter p and greater than and less than symbols between them to create an open tag, and closed it with a slash before the P tagHTML properly means Hyper text Markup Language
If you need to ask "what is HTML", isn't it pretty easy to just click on the "no" button in the poll? And if you are asking that question in a poll that asks do you know it, maybe this would be helpful:
