I added The Novice by Taran Matharu.

It’s a fantasy book for young adults.
The main character is an orphan, and meets a soldier who gives him a book from a summoner, a person gifted with the ability to use magic, who summons demons from another world. He tries it out for himself, and after getting into a lot of trouble due to a murderous bully, finds himself in summoner school. Summoners are very rare (there are 24 people in the entire school) and are valuable to the military as their country is at war against the orcs.
It did an amazing job of showing racism between humans, dwarves, elves, gremlins, and orcs. It’s as if the book was written with what’s going on currently in mind, although it was published in 2015. It doesn’t lecture, it shows the pain minorities have been put through. There are also some wonderful additions to dwarves lore that I fell in love with.

Last week my husband and I both saw one of the books in this series and picked it up separate from each other because the cover is gorgeous. I didn’t know the author, so I wasn’t hooked, but my husband convinced me I should give it a shot. I had surgery this morning and will be in bed for a week, so I’ll be doing a lot of reading this month. I’m so glad he insisted I read this book because I’m on the 3rd book in the series now! (And will probably order the other series by this author, because it’s taken me less than two days to read each book and I only got the books 6 days ago)

Ooh, this looks like a series that would appeal to my high school students, so I'm ordering them for our library. Thanks for the recommendation Emily!
