Alana Ugh, there's no way i could force myself through Midnight's Children again! Never Let MeGo is good, but I've had Wide Sargasso Sea on my list forever and since I just re-read Jane Eyre recently, it sounds perfect!

Beth Wide Sargasso Sea looks really interesting. What didnt you like about Midnights Children. Just curious as I decide which book to choose.

Alana Salmon Rushdie I think is an author that you either love or hate. While I appreciate the complexity if his writing, it's in a magic-realism style that I find very difficult and I think a lot of it is just cultural differences. I enjoy reading about other cultures and the historical aspects that he brings out about India in the book are fascinating: if the book had only been about that, i would have loved it. But the story and storytelling manner just didn't work for me. But I think it's more a matter of personal taste and preference, so others may really like it.

Beth Interesting we have two in the magical realism genre. Gabriel García Márquez is known for this as well.

George P. Autumn of the Patriarch is #3 on my next-to-read list, so I was excited to see it in the poll- and then disappointed that only one other reader has voted for it so far. I've read several Marquez books and enjoyed them a great deal.
I read Midnight's Children in 2012 and gave it four stars; I would read another Rushdie.
I have a Byatt near the top of my to-read list also, but it's Possession, not Angels and Insects.
I also have Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day in my to-read list but would read Never Let Me Go if that's the choice. He was born in Japan but family left when he was five, so he was split between Japanese and English cultures.

Beth I didnt realize Ishiguro wrote Remains of the Day. Loved the movie and have the book on my "to read" list.

Jeane Omg! Wide Sargasso Sea! Talk about a PERFECT June read! Set in the Caribbean, in a steamy jungle setting, and a pre-quel (unofficially of course) to Jane Eyre! I already read this book, but I loved it so it's getting all my votes! (yes, I only have one)

Candice Midnight's Children! The little book summary made me choose it. It sounds very enticing!

George P. Looks as though it's shaping up to be a close 2- book race between "Wide Sargasso Sea" and "Never Let Me Go", so I'm thinking of changing my vote to one of those, but undecided as to which. "Never Let Me Go" has higher liked ratings in Goodreads, but that may not mean I will like it more, does it?
I've decided I'm happy to read either of the front-runners so I'm going to leave my vote on Autumn of the Patriarch, even though it won't win (and I'll read it anyway).

Alana Never Let Me Go is bittersweet, not tons of action (although some), more of a mentally compelling story. It's definitely worth reading, if you tend to like more thought-provoking, "put yourself in someone else's shoes" kind of stories. I haven't read Wide Sargasso Sea, but I want to, have heard good things. But I also read Jane Eyre recently, so I'm more ready to read it.

George P. Since "Never Let Me Go" won the poll for our June "Classics Without All the Class" selection, I'll use Kazuo Ishiguro instead of Knut Hamsun (Hunger) for the letter "K" for my classic author alphabet challenge 2016. I'll get to Knut later.

George P. Disappointed that Marquez's "Autumn of the Patriarch" wasn't chosen for the June selection in the Classics w/o All the Class group, I am reading it anyway, along with "Never Let Me Go". I need Marquez for my alphabet reading challenge. Am finding "Autumn.." somewhat tough going with it's very rambling, long unpunctuated passages (except for commas, and every few pages, a period), and frequent shifting points of view between 1st person, 3rd and even 1st person- plural (we). Marvelous in its way, though. "Never Let me Go" is easier reading and am nearly finished with that.
