I read Midnight's Children in 2012 and gave it four stars; I would read another Rushdie.
I have a Byatt near the top of my to-read list also, but it's Possession, not Angels and Insects.
I also have Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day in my to-read list but would read Never Let Me Go if that's the choice. He was born in Japan but family left when he was five, so he was split between Japanese and English cultures.

I've decided I'm happy to read either of the front-runners so I'm going to leave my vote on Autumn of the Patriarch, even though it won't win (and I'll read it anyway).
