“I love everything you do.”
As soon as he sees me, he reaches for me, pulling me into him while he sits up on the couch. I move with him, climbing onto his lap, my bare thighs bracketing his hips as he squeezes me tight. “You’re okay.” His voice is thick, clogged with sleep and grief I don’t understand.
I know her family. Our family.
He’s been doing that a lot over the last few days, snapping random photos of me when he thinks I’m not looking.
But nothing could ever change the way I feel about you, Mallory. You’ll always be it for me.”
Because they’re all staring at Chris. Watching his slow transition from standing to kneeling. Kneeling. On one knee with an open ring box in his hands and his eyes on Giselle.
The defiant way he lifts his chin confirms it. Ruthless ambition. I’ve never seen it on him before, but somehow it fits him better than everything else. Better than his goofy smile. Better than his soft and serious eyes. Better than his heated gaze and earnest tone when he said he loved me.
I never thought it would end this way for us. That he would be silent, emotionless as he watched me walk out of his life.
