“Yes, Terrible One. You are the most hideous mate anyone ever brought back to Barath, and so you will drive all predators away from our nest with ease.” He churred again, a soothing sound, actually.
“There you go, some common ground,” she said, smiling. The translator must have fritzed because Zylar took a step toward her, churring, and he said seriously, “No ground that you stand upon could ever be common, Beryl Bowman.” Oh my God. That was such a perfect response that her heart skipped a beat, and her insides went warm and fuzzy.
Though they had been gone maybe half an hour, according to her internal time clock, Snaps still went wild when they walked in, prancing around their legs with exclamations of “Welcome, welcome! I’m so glad you’re here! Welcome! Gosh! Welcome!” Dogs were fucking great. Beryl set down her stuff and let Snaps smell it all, then she rubbed his head, massaged his ears, and scratched his belly until his back leg kicked.
His beta tendencies and lack of self-esteem might even be what had gotten him passed over in prior Choosings. But Beryl wasn’t in the market for an alpha asshole, so that worked out great. If you had to be abducted by aliens, it was good to wind up with one who respected your boundaries and preferences.
Snaps fell back onto his butt, staring at the seedlings with wide eyes. “Am I…a father?” “Sort of,” Beryl said. Zylar churred, amusement overwhelming him. Then Snaps lay down in front of the plants with a determined sound. “I will protect you, tiny green dirt dogs.”
“Talking dogs aren’t mathematically possible,” Snaps said, “but here I am.”
“There was a famous comedian on my world. I guess one of his sayings applies here. ‘When you’re in jail, a good friend will be trying to bail you out. A best friend will be in the cell next to you saying, Damn, that was fun.
“As long as I’m not the one you break promises to. Anyway, consider this: If your enemy cheats, why do you have to choose the high road? People should get what they deserve.”
Love meant treasuring someone else’s happiness more than your own.
