Leading by authority is a relic of industrial-age methodologies — when low-skilled workers were supervised closely so that their output was maximized. In the world of software, we don’t work this way. We’re hiring incredibly smart people and paying them hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the decisions on how to grow companies by making complex software that customers love. When you have that sort of talent, you need to give them the room to make decisions so that you can get the full benefit of their knowledge and skill.
