“Crimson, did you hear what I said?”
“We need to get out of the boat!” Julian shouted through the rain as they bumped against a darkened dock.
When Scarlett didn’t answer, Julian grabbed her hand and hauled her onto the dimly lit, shaking dock.
Julian didn’t answer right away. “I think the game, or at least your part in it, should be over. I should never have brought you here. I can take you to a safe place, off the isle—” “No!” Scarlett cut him off. “I’m not leaving here without my sister.
sister? “I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
“I don’t know if I am or not! But what other choices do I have?” Sheets of silver rain fell harder.
“I’m so stupid.” Her voice danced a line between breaking and shouting. “None of this means anything to you. You saw my fiancé, got jealous, acted rashly, and now you regret it.”
“You’re such a liar,” Scarlett snapped.
“No,” Scarlett said, “you lie to yourself. You pull me to you whenever it seems you’re afraid of losing me, but whenever I get too close, you push me away.”
“Is this close enough for you?” Julian’s mouth hovered over hers. A whisper shy of kissing her. “You’re sure you want this?”
The boy who’d saved her from drowning in more ways than one.
“There are still things you don’t know about me, Crimson.” “Then tell me what they are,”
Every touch created colors she had never seen. Colors as soft as velvet and as sharp as sparks that turned into stars.
“I don’t know about this,” Julian said. “Since when did you become the nervous one?”
“He just won’t stay away from you,” said Governor Dragna.
“I agree with your daughter,” said the count, his arm now curling around her, almost protectively. “I think this is going a little too far.”
as her father slashed his dagger across Julian’s beautiful face. From his jaw, across his cheek, all the way up to below his eye.
“It’s going to be all right,” the count whispered.
“Crimson, don’t worry about me,” Julian said.
“I’ve got nowhere else I need to be,” Julian said. “Are we all going to go upstairs now, or do you plan to have us sleep in here?”
“But if you say another word aside from yes, my generosity ends.” “No,” Scarlett said. “You will not touch him again, because I will not do another thing unless you release him this moment.”
“Let him go,” the count grit out. “Or our deal is over.”
“Now, please, leave, before you make this harder.”
What happened in those tunnels, that wasn’t me.”
“This marriage is very important to me. The thought of losing you made me go a little mad. By the time we were in the tunnels I wasn’t thinking clearly. But things will be different once we’re married. I’ll make you happy, I promise.”
She could have misread Julian. Julian could have misread her.
Nobody deserved his punishments.
said, “I don’t think you realize what you’re doing, sweetheart.” “Stop calling me that! I’m not yours, and I’m very aware of my actions.
“From where I’m standing, it looks as if Legend has done me a favor.”
“Don’t be too sure about any of that,” the count mumbled. “Legend doesn’t do anyone favors.”
“But you were passed out in the closet.” “I’ve recovered. I’m a quick healer.”
“Crimson, don’t fall apart on me now.”
“I think we need to search the balconies to find our last clue.”
“I know going out during daylight is against the rules, but I don’t think Legend really abides by rules.
“Now you’re finally thinking like a player.”
Scarlett’s first thought was, Legend has left this place. She saw no top hats, no rose petals, no colors brighter than palest yellow. But while her eyes were letting her down, her ears picked up a gentle melody. Subtle.
“Does this feel like Legend to you?” “If feeling like Legend means disturbing and creepy, then yes.”
“Crimson, I’m not seeing anything!” Julian shouted over the music.
“Inside the cover I etched the coordinates of a boat, just off the coast of the isle.” Fresh panic filled Scarlett as Julian’s face grew more serious. This felt too much like good-bye.
“Crimson, you need to jump now!”
“Julian, what are you not telling me?” His lips fell into a rough line, making him look sad and regretful all at once. “There’s not time for all the things I wish I could say.”
“I’m so glad you finally made it, Scarlett.”
