Julian pressed her up against the wall, a few short feet after she attempted to run. “You’re going to get both of us killed if you don’t stop this,” he growled.
“It’s a different color, but I’m sure you’ve seen this on Dante,” said Julian.
“You can stop lying to me. I saw you at the funeral. I know you’re really Legend!”
I’m here because I want to stop him from destroying anyone else the way he destroyed her.”
“I didn’t sleep at all. I left you sitting in the tavern on purpose because after being with you in the room the day before I didn’t think it was a good idea for me to see you again.”
“Your father’s here?” “Yes,” Scarlett said. They both started running.
The ceiling now seemed to be sinking too, moving closer, dripping cold onto the top of her head. “I think this room is trying to kill us,” Scarlett said.
“The room is connected to our emotions,” Scarlett said. “I think we need to relax.”
But despite his lies, somehow she knew that she was safe with him. He’d never hurt her.
“Don’t you think it’s strange you don’t even know the name of the man you’re marrying?”
Since Annalise crushed his heart, Legend swore he would do the same to any daughters, or granddaughters, unfortunate enough to be a part of her line. He would ruin their chances at having happy marriages or finding love, and if they went mad in the process, even better.”
“So, when my friends and I learned of your engagement,” Julian went on, “we knew it was only a matter of time before Legend invited you to Caraval so he could break it off.”
“Who are you really?” “Let’s just say my family is well connected.”
“So you don’t blame yourself when your father beats your sister?”
“Your father is the one to blame,” he said. “You’ve done nothing wrong.” “You don’t know that,”
“Crimson, we should keep moving.” Julian gently touched the edge of her hip,
A part of Scarlett couldn’t deny there was something seductive about winning the heart of someone who’d vowed to never love again.
“We’ll find her,” Julian said. “What happened to Rosa won’t happen to your sister.”
“I never said I was a good person, Crimson.”
I didn’t know Legend would kidnap Tella, but I knew that he would take one of you.”
If Scarlett failed, her sister would die.
So, she only gave herself one minute. One minute to cry for Dante and sob for her sister and rage because Julian was not who she thought he was. To fall on the bed and whine and moan over all the things that had churned out of her control. To pick up Legend’s stupid vase of roses and dash them against the mantel of the fireplace.
“Crimson, don’t cry because of me.” “You think too highly of yourself. My sister’s missing, my father has found us, and Dante’s dead. These tears are not for you.”
but now the tears wouldn’t stop, and maybe Julian was right: maybe a few were because of him. Julian leaned closer and brushed them away with his fingertips. “Don’t.” Scarlett pulled back. “I deserve that.”
“I’m not sorry for doing what your sister wanted: I believe people should have the freedom to make their own decisions. But I am sorry for every time I’ve lied to you.”
But if you give me another chance, I swear, I’ll make it up to you.”
“I forgive you,” she said. “Just promise me, no more lies.”
“I promise.”
More flowers! Scarlett kicked over the vase, spilling the flowers across the threshold of her room before pulling the box inside. She couldn’t tell if it felt heavy or light.
The color was much lighter, almost pure white—wedding-gown white.
When I bought the gown, next door to the shop was a path of buttons that led to a hatter and haberdashery shop shaped like a top hat.”
I just wanted to warn you: I think you’re both about to make a mistake.”
“Legend.” She gasped, her heart dropping into her stomach.
He might not be Legend, but Scarlett sensed he was someone.
Julian cleared his throat. “You might want to actually look at the buttons, mate.” “I did. But I’m not really interested in trinkets.” The gentleman folded Scarlett’s fingers over her palm, and before she could pull away he kissed her hand, letting his lips linger much longer than necessary. “I think we should go,” Julian said. His knuckles were white,
“Love, I think we need to leave now.” Julian
Every shade of purple flashed in front of her eyes.
“Do whatever it takes to stop her!” he called.
“But there’s lightning!” Scarlett said. “We can’t get in a boat.” “You have any better ideas?”
Her father looked afraid. Raindrops ran down his cheeks like tears.
She’d already made her choice, and she’d made it before she’d run out of the haberdashery with Julian. She didn’t know the exact instant when it happened, but an arranged marriage to a man she knew only through letters was no longer something Scarlett wanted. Finally she understood what Tella meant when she’d said there was more to life than being safe.
She remembered thinking falling for him would be like falling in love with darkness, but now she imagined he was more like a starry night: the constellations were always there, constant, magnificent guides against the ever-present black.
