because although she knew she was going to choose Tella, she couldn’t say it right away, as if maybe there was a way to save them both that she hadn’t figured out yet.
If a drop could give a person a day of life, maybe Scarlett could bring Julian and Tella both back to life if she gave them enough of her blood.
Every person gets one impossible wish, if the person wants something more than anything, and they can find a bit of magic to help them along.
Helping my sister and me won’t completely make up for whatever happened then, but it might help a little. I also think it would create a very interesting game, and I know how you like to play. Yours truly, Donatella Dragna
Legend handed Scarlett a short stack of letters. “I’m supposed to give you these, as well.”
“You’re not really Legend, are you?” A faint smile. “Does that mean yes or no?” Scarlett was in no mood for riddles. “My name is Caspar.”
“You’re not really Legend.”
Dear Master Legend, I’m willing to do whatever it takes. I’m willing to die. Donatella Dragna
“Foolish Tella.” “Personally, I think clever is a more appropriate word.”
“A wish isn’t something someone can give,” Tella explained. “Legend could give you a little extra magic to help you along, but the wish would only work if you wanted it more than anything.”
“You didn’t fail all of them. You passed the most important one, and that was enough. If you hadn’t, I wasn’t supposed to jump.”
but Legend never vowed to destroy all the females in her line.
“I need to know about Julian.” Tella chewed on the corner of her lip. “I was wondering when you were going to ask about him.” “What does that mean?”
“So, Julian is really alive now?” “Yes, very much.
Julian was meant only to get us to the isle and then take off. I think he was supposed to leave you at a clock shop. But you didn’t hear that from me,”
“I’m guessing Dante didn’t really die either?” “No, he died, but also came back, like Julian,”
“I’m not a performer. Regular people who die during the game stay dead. Now come on.”
“If the party ends and you want to leave Caraval and everyone who’s part of this world behind, I will go with you. But I’m not letting you miss this.
“I love you, Tella.” “I know you do.” Tella looked up with an indescribably tender expression. “I wouldn’t be here if you didn’t.”
“Her name is Angelique. You might recall her from the dress shop. She loves flirting with the ones who have their sights set on someone else.” Aiko looked pointedly at Scarlett. “Is this your way of saying I should go over there and talk to him?” “You said it, not us,” said Tella. Aiko nodded in agreement.
“Julian Bernardo Marrero Santos.”
“But I do want you to stop looking at me as if I’m some kind of stranger.” “But you are,” she said.
What I told you—about my family being well connected and playing games—that was true.” Julian waved an arm, gesturing toward all the people around them. “This has been my family for most of my life.”
“You’re related to Legend?”
“Legend sent me a letter, asking me to play one last game. He claimed he was trying to redeem himself. And I wanted to believe him.”
but every time I tried to walk away from you, I couldn’t do it.
“Legend is your brother?”
“I don’t age as long as I’m one of Legend’s performers,”
“I stayed because I started to care about you. Legend doesn’t always play fair, and I wanted to try to help you.
“I might not be able to die during the game, but all the injuries I receive throughout Caraval leave scars.”
“If anything, I think this scar is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” Julian’s eyes widened. “Does that mean you’ll forgive me?” Scarlett hesitated.
“But, don’t you have rules about involvement with people who aren’t a part of Caraval?” Scarlett asked. “I’m not really too concerned with rules.”
Dearest Donatella, Congratulations on escaping your father and surviving Caraval. I am pleased our plan worked, although I had no doubts you would survive the game. I’m sure your mother will be quite proud, and I believe you should be able to see her soon. But first you must keep up your end of our bargain. I hope you haven’t forgotten what you owe me in exchange for all that I’ve shared with you. I plan on collecting my payment very soon. Truly yours, A friend
