Two halves of one whole. It didn’t matter if we were weak on our own—as long as we had each other we were strong.
“No one’s seen Dominic for years. But everyone knows he’s a monster. The rumor is that he’s cursed, and his whole kingdom with him.” She leaned toward us and lowered her voice. “They call him the Beast.”
“Any ruler, or his heir, has the right to call a Princess Tourney to choose his bride. Every eligible princess in the land must compete, and the winner is betrothed to the one who called the Tourney.”
“Only the princesses attend, and they are bound to secrecy.
I told myself the shaking was the aftereffects of nerves and had nothing to do with the fact that an attractive prince had just saved my life and was now holding my hand while gazing into my eyes with concern. Nothing whatsoever.
Love is pain.
“Maybe you should try to lose, Snow. With any luck, the Tourney will strike down your stepmother.”
It was a strange dynamic, this competition where everyone had to try their best, but everyone wanted to lose.
Jon met my eyes for only the briefest moment, before his focus centered on his sister. As was right and proper. But the fire that had leaped from his eyes to take up residence somewhere around my heart made me question if his sister held his full attention, after all.
Why couldn’t I control my emotions around him long enough to push him away?
Our circumstances had been nothing but complicated since we met, and yet the attraction between us persisted.
“Let me make one thing clear.” His words were low but clear, spoken slowly and with dangerous intent. “It doesn’t matter what you do or say. I will always choose her. Every. Single. Time.”
“I don’t care about consequences. I don’t care about responsibility. I’m going half out of my mind.” His low voice throbbed with passion. “All I want is you.”
Because despite every barrier between us, despite everything, Jon had chosen me.
“I remember I used to feel so angry at life sometimes,” she said, “when we were children. But you were always there for me. A sister who knew me completely and loved me better than I loved myself. You were always so strong, Lil. You taught me how. And now, finally, it’s my turn to help you.”
Perhaps that had been the lesson, after all. Not that I could stand alone, but that I could be more than one person. Sophie’s twin. Jon’s fiancée. Myself.
I can defeat this Beast; I can free Palinar. So don’t worry. I’ll be coming back. But not until I can bring the light with me.
