More than anything, he wanted them to know that even though they would grow up never knowing their father, it was not for the lack of his love for them. That was the most bitter irony of war: The greatest acts of love for your family were the ones that kept you apart from them.

Making a living in the Mos Eisley underworld means constant legwork, sketchy math, dubious markups, and always knowing whatever the next thing is gonna be, no matter what, exactly, the next thing is. It is exhausting.
