They had once been two inseparable souls, their shadows constantly overlapping and entwining. One being split into two. A unit, defined not by their different exteriors, but by their collective desires. They had been able to read each other’s thoughts, as though they shared a single conscience. Their hopes, their dreams, their wants, and fears had been exactly the same.

The missing piece of himself, his other half, now stood before him, yet they felt miles and decades apart.

He was put off by it, by her. Why does she get to go back with Ingram, and I cannot?

Ingram was obviously obsessed with the little female, considering he constantly tried to touch her with his intangible form. He’d huff with annoyance, and just hover his palm around any part of her he could.

He did have a nice, deep voice when he spoke, Aleron decided. It was the most enjoyable quality of the male so far.

Instead, he crouched to be at the same level and leaned forward, and Aleron mimicked the action. They pretended to nuzzle skulls.

“We will try to figure out a way to bring you back to the living world,” Ingram stated quietly. “If Emerie can come back, there must be a way for you as well.”

“I will do the same from here,” Aleron answered, his voice more guttural in comparison to Ingram’s – likely due to still being in his monstrous form. “Then I will not stop until I find you.”

His heart gouged in loss, in heartache, as his sight turned blue with sorrow. A whine broke from his chest. Come back. He didn’t want to be... abandoned again.

“I’m just glad I got to see Emerie, and know that she’s happy, safe, and has someone who will love her. It’s more reassurance than anyone else here in the afterlife would get. Does that make sense?”

The initial introduction to them all meant little to Aleron, so long as Gideon retained everything else – which was much more important. For example, when he’d called Mavka caring, or when they’d shaken hands in their human custom of greeting. That was all this human needed, because Aleron understood it would be what kept him as his companion. Without it, he’d be alone in this world again. I must not let him forget... me.

“You saved her life by sacrificing your own? Is this not a good thing to do? I would have done this for my kindred.”

He’d made his first real human companion, and he was excited the male had made the offer himself! He wasn’t afraid of Aleron, nor did he seem deterred by their differences.

He let me hold him. Hehe! Bright yellow filled his vision as he swayed his head, rather pleased about all this. He even let me put my wings around him. And he hadn’t seemed to mind Aleron staring at him the entire time they had been encased in the feathery blanket. I made a friend here. One that wants me to join him on his adventure.

I also find his eyes... pretty. They were such a light, but intense green that they seemed piercing each time they briefly flicked to him. He liked them the most, although his deep voice did tingle his ear holes.

Until now, Aleron didn’t know it was possible to be both offended and complimented at the same time.

“My heart is telling me to hold you,” Aleron softly stated in return, nuzzling the jaw of his skull against his temple. “My wings are precious to me, but they ached to bring you into their close and protective hold. I have never felt this for anyone but my kindred. It means much to me to feel this for you.”

“Is it possible for someone to be mean, yet kind at the same time? He did not like us, refused to play with or talk to us, but he would allow us to rest within his ward. He never turned us away, no matter how much we annoyed him or how many times we fought. He even named us.”

Aleron had turned into a fuzzy moth, ever chasing this human’s handsome, transfixing light. He started cherishing him in ways he utterly didn’t understand, which hurt his chest. He craved expressing them. He wanted to let his instincts take over and lead him as they had his whole life.

“I am doing what feels right to me!” Aleron roared, causing Gideon to recoil in surprise. “I am following my instincts because I do not know how else to be. And this...” He licked across Gideon’s mouth once more, and the roughness of hair and the softness of lips both scraped and soothed his tongue. “This feels good. This is what I want, and I desire to do this with you. I have craved it every second since I last did so.”
