None of us think enough of these things on which the eye rests. But don't let us let the eye rest. Why should the eye be so lazy? I then tried to explain the rather delicate logical shade, that I not only liked brown paper, but liked the quality of brownness in paper, just as I liked the quality of brownness in October woods, or in beer, or in the peat-streams of the North.

The road was very erratic, for every true English road exists in order to lead one a dance; and what could be more beautiful and beneficent than a dance?

And a little while afterwards, when my sea journey was over, the sight of men working in the English fields reminded me again that there are still songs for harvest and for many agricultural routines. And I suddenly wondered why if this were so it should be quite unknown, for any modern trade to have a ritual poetry. How did people come to chant rude poems while pulling certain ...more

The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one's own country as a foreign land.

"That is what makes life at once so splendid and so strange. We are in the wrong world. When I thought that was the right town, it bored me; when I knew it was wrong, I was happy. So the false optimism, the modern happiness, tires us because it tells us we fit into this world. The true happiness is that we don't fit. We come from somewhere else. We have lost our way."
