A promising series of studies from an Italian research team in Florence shows that training people to recognize initial hunger improves insulin sensitivity and lowers body mass index.
Of course, waiting to eat until hunger actually happens improves insulin sensitivity, too . . . and probably lowers BMI.
You’ll find that the thrill of being in the white area of diet restriction is gone, but so is the misery of being in the black area of out-of-control behavior.
In the healing of a serious eating disorder, we often see periods of time when the symptoms of the eating disorder return. These times are associated with periods of increased stress. This stress can be greater than the person’s ability to cope with it. When this happens, one needs to see the return of symptoms as a red flag, which is not to be ignored. It represents a need to seek help in order to get back on the path of healing.
