Wearing a tuxedo and his trademark sideways grin, Cheney could hardly have had a friendlier audience as he took the stage at the Mayflower Hotel near the White House. “Two thousand and eight!” someone in the audience called out. “Not on your life,” Cheney, the noncandidate, quickly retorted.
