“Fi—fine.”
“You like them because I bought them for you? Or do you just like them?”
My brother was fifteen years older than me, and he taught me what to do for a girl before I was even a legal adult. I knew my way around a female’s body, but suddenly, I was nervous in her presence. I was confident, but the stakes were higher with her. I didn’t want to be just as big of a disappointment to Claire as Chad was.
“Tell me, Claire. Do you like this?”
“I’m gonna need you to be vocal, sweetheart. Remember, we gotta make them believe it. Chad could be listening right now.”
“It’s not a bad thing. Why do you look embarrassed?”
“Tell me,”
“I just didn’t get this way with him.”
“Only with myself.”
My thumb pushed on her clit, and when her hips jerked toward me, I knew I’d hit the jackpot.
“Tell me,” I pleaded, sounding just as desperate as I felt. “Does it feel good?” “Yes,”
The thought of dropping to my knees to replace my fingers with my tongue crossed my mind, but I forced myself to stay upright.
“I’ve gotta say…if you were mine, I’d make you come every single second of every single day, because I’ve never witnessed anything as beautiful as this.”
“So, this is what you look like when you’re truly relaxed?” I said, surprised that my voice was more of a rasp. I cleared my throat and finally pulled my finger out of her wet pussy, hating that I had to take a step away. The goal was achieved. The game was over. But I wanted to play again. And again.
“That good, huh?” I asked, rocking back on my heels. “As if your ego needs any more stroking, Theo.”
“Put your game face on, Bryant.”
Her smile shook me to my core, and I pulled her out of the room to flaunt her as my girl, even though we both knew she wasn’t mine.
“Get your butt over here, Bryant.” Ford ducked behind his menu as soon as I looked over at him. Theo was grinning at me, and I sighed wistfully as I walked over to their table, knowing all eyes were on us.
“For you to be our fake girlfriend, too.”
“I told them you were mine.”
“I’m not your fake girlfriend, Theo.”
“So, you’re my real gir...

“You should get her a jersey with your name on it.”
“I do not like the look on your face,”
“Take a look around, Bryant.”

“That’s it! I’m bringing you all salads and water.”

Chad came in here yesterday.”
“Well…” I started. “Honestly? Everything is good here. I’m a burger gal myself.” A warm smile flitted across his face, and he shut his menu a moment later. “You know what, surprise me. I like any and everything. Order me what you would order yourself.” I shifted on my feet again, but then I nodded and grabbed his menu. “I can do that. It’ll be right out. Can I get you anything else to drink? Or is water okay?” “Water is fine,” he said before seeming uncomfortable. He glanced away before mumbling, “Thank you, um…?” “Claire.” I smiled as I walked away, feeling strange the entire time I put his

Silence fell over the table like a plague when I sat down on his lap, and as if the stars aligned, the door to The Bex opened, and in walked Chad with Iris, one of the girls he had studied with in the past. My heart slowly dropped to my feet when the realization hit me like a ton of bricks.
“See you tonight in our room?”
“Has anyone ever told you that it’s not smart to practice when you’re exhausted?”
“What’s wrong? Why are you killing yourself up here when you’re clearly exhausted?” Silence. But with her silence came glossier eyes, and I didn’t like it.
can’t take a break, Theo! Don’t you understand that I need the money?! I need to get this lead role.”
“I’ll get a full scholarship for my senior year if I get the lead in the spring showcase. I won’t have to figure out how to pay for everything on top of paying for college. I have a partial scholarship, but a full would be better. I don’t have a wealthy family. It’s just me and my mom, and…”
“Everyone else just wants it…but no one understands that I actually need it. I work so hard and…”
calm. “I know what it’s like to need money. Everyone thinks I come from a wealthy family because of my skill on the ice.”
“When you say no one understands, I do.” I moved a breath closer to her and noticed how her chest expanded with a held breath. “I, better than anyone, understand determination and hard work. I work hard on the ice to reach my goal of getting into the NHL for my parents. Everyone”—I
including you, thinks I’m just your typical selfish jock who wants to be the best at hockey just to make it to the top. But that’s not why. I want to give back to the two people who took me in and saved me. And maybe I want to prove to myself that I’m not that abandoned little kid who only felt safe when they were in control on the ice.”
“Fine. You…understand. I guess you and I are more alike than I thought.”
don’t know if my father was a druggie or what, but my mother made sure to call him every name in the book for abandoning us. She’s never been able to recover—emotionally or financially.”
“That’s why I really need this role. Money isn’t easy to come by.”
“You need rest,”
“Do I need to throw you over my shoulder, because I will,”
The one he wanted me to wear to his next game to confirm that I truly was his girlfriend—you know, to ward off the puck bunnies.
“We fell asleep,” I croaked, staying completely still because if I let myself move against him, I’d be in deep trouble. “I know,” he answered, voice raspy and a little daring. “Boyfriends and girlfriends fall asleep together all the time. No big deal. Go back to sleep.”
“I’m comfortable with you right where you are, Bryant. Stay.”
“I can’t be held responsible for what I do with you looking at me like that while wearing my jersey.”
